Artificial Intelligence can make a substantial impactful contribution towards combatting climate change. Scientists using AI have achieved up to 99% accuracy when it comes to predicting complex weather patterns like tropical cyclones and atmospheric rivers that would otherwise be difficult for human trackers to observe.
AI requires significant amounts of energy, with its own environmental consequences. According to research at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, training one large machine learning algorithm for natural language processing takes an amount equivalent to aviation’s annual emissions; additionally, this hardware produces additional greenhouse gas emissions while data centres require large amounts of cooling water.
Companies developing AI should strive to employ responsible and sustainable practices that minimize its environmental impact, such as using less data for computational power or selecting computing techniques which use less energy.
6. Direct Air Capture
Climate change has become more urgent, and as we recognize that curbing emissions won’t be enough to mitigate its effects, we need to find effective strategies to offset our carbon output – one promising approach is direct air capture. The technology chemically removes CO2 from the atmosphere and stores it underground permanently – companies such as Carbon Engineering and Climeworks are currently building large-scale facilities here in America.
One of the advantages of DAC technology is its lack of land requirements, thereby limiting its impact on food production and other uses of land. However, as it still relies on fossil fuels for powering purposes, policy makers must take precautions to ensure these technologies are safely scaled.
These measures should include incentivizing meaningful community engagement, conducting an in-depth social impact evaluation and requiring legally binding benefit agreements – these measures will help ensure DAC projects are successful and do not create moral hazard among polluters looking for ways to offset emissions.
