Honda CR-V 1.6 Diesel Engine Problems

The Honda CR-V SUV is one of the safest on the road, boasting a spacious cabin and comfortable ride quality. However, there have been some notable engine and drivetrain issues which may hinder its performance over time.

Many owners of Honda CR-Vs have reported an issue with their diesel engines and specifically glow plugs that cause fuel and oil mixture.


Honda’s 1.6L diesel engine is an incredibly quiet and refined powerplant with plenty of power for everyday driving, plus excellent fuel savings figures.

However, when injectors become defective they can create problems by overdelivering fuel – this may be caused by faulty springs or rust build up on the injector nozzles.

As this can result in fuel and oil mixing together and damaging the engine, it is vital that injectors be regularly checked for signs of wear or rusting.

Good news is that software updates and cautious driving practices can mitigate this issue, although it should still be kept in mind before purchasing the CR-V with its 1.6L diesel engine. It remains an excellent vehicle, offering up 57mpg with effortless performance.

Glow plugs

Honda’s CR-V with its 1.6L diesel engine is not Honda’s go-to choice when it comes to power. Offering just 120 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque, its performance may suffice in city settings but lacks sufficient oomph on highways or when you want to get moving quickly.

Honda CR-V owners who reached out to Consumer Reports reported gasoline seeping into the oil system, contrary to expectations for diesels. Honda says they’re working on a solution for these SUVs that will be made available through dealers.

Anyone changing the oil on these cars must ensure they use a new filter, since using used ones could allow unburned fuel into the engine and leak out unburned. Furthermore, installing proper glow plugs at this time will help them switch off after warming up is complete.


A diesel engine tends to make more noise than its gasoline counterpart and often requires more frequent oil changes due to carbon build-up on its injector tips that needs cleaning or replacing. Unfortunately, this can become quite costly.

Honda’s Earth Dreams Technology environmental program relies heavily on an engine which delivers excellent fuel economy, low emissions and agile performance. To do this, they utilize a Bosch solenoid injection system capable of operating under high pressure to achieve finer atomization for more efficient combustion leading to reduced exhaust emissions.

Honda issued a statement to Consumer Reports detailing plans to address this problem that should become available through dealerships in November, as part of their warranty coverage. They do not consider this action to be a safety recall because they don’t believe it affects safe operation or violate U.S laws and regulations.
