The Green Screen – Creating Sustainable Content in a Digital Age
Environmental and sustainable content can reach a broad audience via online platforms, from students in remote villages to policy makers in Europe and entrepreneurs in North America.
Green screens can be useful tools in live broadcasting to create virtual backgrounds such as maps and weather forecasts; however, low quality green screens may leave behind spills which become difficult to clean out post production.

What is a Green Screen?
Green screens are fabric backdrops in the same hue as your subject, which should match up perfectly when choosing one to use for recording videos and shooting photos. There are nine-foot tall and 15-foot wide models available; make sure there is enough room for movement around your subject before selecting yours!
Make sure that your green screen is evenly lit using either a monitor with false color capability or light meters to achieve this result. Aim to shoot below your subject when taking photographs so as to reduce green spillage onto their faces and create a smoother appearance.
Many video editors come equipped with an in-built chroma key feature. You may even use free software such as Windows Movie Maker and iMovie on Mac to achieve similar effects; however, more sophisticated suites of tools often produce superior results.
How to Use a Green Screen
Green screen can create stunning results when combined with the appropriate images or background videos, and while many associate it with professionals only, its use can actually be utilized by anyone looking to create incredible videos.
Lighting is of utmost importance when shooting videos using a green screen, as its presence can either make or break your green screen shot. To achieve the best results, use a light meter to ensure the screen is evenly lit and exposed one stop under.
Avoid wearing clothing that reflects green light as this will show through in the final footage. If possible, dress your actors in dark colors and apply makeup to cancel out any green tones from their skin. Furthermore, having access to both an excellent green screen and powerful computer running chroma key software are necessary.
Tips for Using a Green Screen
When working with a green screen, proper lighting is of utmost importance. To avoid “spill”, which could prevent successful keying of your subject’s image.
Make sure that the subject keeps their hands away from the background in order to reduce shadows, and ensure the green screen is wrinkle-free before shooting in order to create clearer and more accurate keys in post production.
As well as these tips, it’s also crucial to review your footage as you shoot it – this will allow you to detect any mistakes which might otherwise become hard or impossible to fix later on. Also if possible use a tripod as this will prevent camera movement which might otherwise sabotage the final shot.
The Future of Green Screens
Green screens enable content creators to take their storytelling to a whole new level. From showing their audience where they come from to creating virtual sets for product videos, green screens make storytelling come alive. Plus they’re an inexpensive solution for travel expenses, rental costs and studio space rental!
Setting up the proper green screen setup is integral to producing a high-quality final video. Make sure that the lighting is evenly distributed and that your subject stays at least 6 to 10 feet from the screen to avoid shadows and make “keying” easier.
Use a high-resolution camera when filming video to easily separate your subject from their background and ensure there are no flaws or blurriness in the final shot. 4K resolution or higher should ideally be shot, although wrinkles in fabric green screens may be remedied through ironing or steaming while wrinkled paper backgrounds may take more work to correct.
